This beautifully patinated coffee table is is known locally in India as a Takhat.
They were used as daybeds by the wealthy merchant class in the 19th Century. A raised bed to catch the occasional breeze during the hottest hours of the day.
This one is from Gujarat, a typical example of the area, with carved panels on the side and red lacquer applied to the squat legs, to aid protection from termites on the mud floors.
Constructed from wider planks of teak wood, unlike its brothers from Shekawati, in the Thar desert, where the timber is scarce.
Built to last forever, it is very robust and perfect for use by a busy family.
